Characteristic Dorsal fin with I spine and 25-29 soft rays; anal fin with I spines and 18-24 soft rays; Vertebrae: 27-29. Body covered with ctenoid scales. Body black dorsally, silvery on sides. Branchiostegal rays: 7-8. Body deep, heavy, sides straight. Large adults very dark brown.
habitats Inhabit marine environment. Juveniles are found from near surface to about 250 m to more than 1,000 m. Largest adults may be benthopelagic. Adults are plankton-eaters like the other members of the family. Oviparous, with planktonic larvae. 
Distribution All oceans from temperate to tropical waters. Eastern Atlantic: Iceland and British Isles to South Africa including Canary Islands and Ascension Island Not recorded from the Mediterranean
